Living in an area with a nice sidewalk can be a blessing and a curse, depending on how you look at it.
On one hand, having a sidewalk gives you easy access to taking long walks, and getting around. However, it also gives you an odd patch of grass between the sidewalk and the road to deal with. Prepping the Area
Before any gardening and beautifying takes place, you are going to want to remove all the sod from the area.
This can be done in many different ways, but digging it out is our recommended method. By removing the sod, you are creating more room for soil amendment, which is ideal for planting your new garden.
Because this area is next to a busy road, and will also probably have a lot of foot traffic, it’s going to be a little more difficult to grow a thriving garden. Having plenty of compost on top of removing the sod is vital as well.
Choosing Plants
Depending on your hardiness zone and the aesthetic you’re going for, there are many different sidewalk garden (also known as a hellstrip garden) ideas. You are going to want to choose plants and flowers that are appropriate for your climate, no matter what color scheme/design you are going for.
Also keep in mind how the rest of your landscaping looks, as this strip of land can tie everything together. Having plants, flowers, and trees that all work well together creates a better look for your entire property.
Keeping Up on Your Sidewalk
Like we stated before, keep in mind that this is going to be a hard area to garden and keep up on.
In addition to this mini garden being right next to the road and traffic, you are also going to have a lot of people and pets walking by. You may have children trying to pick the flowers, dogs stepping on the plant beds, etc. Choosing heartier, fuller plants has an advantage for this reason as well.
